Building upon Fairey’s history of questioning the control of public space and public discourse, much of the art in “Your Ad Here” examines advertising and salesmanship as tools of propaganda and influence. One series in “Your Ad Here” portrays politicians like Reagan and Nixon as insincere salesmen wielding simple slogans that represent their true agendas when stripped of verbose demagoguery. Another series of works are paintings of Fairey’s Obey “Icon Face” in various urban settings usually reserved for advertising as the primary visual. These works showcase the power of images in the public space, and encourage the viewer to think of public space as more than a one-way dialogue with advertising, but as a venue for creative response. “Your Ad Here” means exactly that… not just THEIR ad here, but you can put YOUR ad here. Additionally, these cityscape paintings contextualize Fairey’s street art as an element integrated in an intentional composition. Some of the works in “Your Ad Here”, such as a group of retired spray-paint stencils demonstrate the simple and direct methods of art application that Fairey has used both in the street, and in his studio practice. All of the works in “Your Ad Here” whether they relate to advertising, politics, or music culture, celebrate art as a powerful tool of direct engagement and empowerment.

PRETTY UGLY – OPERA GALLERY – JUNE 2ND
—————————————————————-

This Thursday (June 2nd) is the reception for my show “Pretty Ugly” at the Opera Gallery in New York.

I have been working on this body of work for the past 6 months and I am very happy with the results. I have spend every free second, dollar, and favor that I had to create this work. Now, after 6 months of hard work, it’s ready.

This work will feature some of my largest works to date. I pushed myself creatively, technologically, and mentally to produce the work.

I will also debut the new anodized Aluminum works that were created during a residency at the Neal Feay company. These pieces are produced by anodizing the aluminum directly with various dyes. This impregnates the surface of the aluminum with pigment so that it cannot be washed off. The works are so durable that you can wash them with lacquer thinner and a pressure washer and it would not mare the surface of the art.

I hope you will join me at the Opera Gallery | 115 Spring Street | New York, NY

Space will be limited, so please RSVP to: RSVP@workhorsevisuals.com

Pretty Ugly

Logan Hicks is an photorealistic landscape and portrait painter. A pioneer in the art world, he has created a hybrid technique of mixed media art. By combining stencils, photography, aerosol and unexpected canvases (such as anodizing on aluminum and etched wood panels) he has laid the groundwork for this new medium.

Logans work follows in the tradition of contemporaries such as Warhol who utilize photographic multiples. With subjects such as the urban landscape, abandoned buildings, trains, cityscapes and crowds his works explores the universal experience of being ‘alone together’ in large cities, capturing a sense of serene desolation and loneliness supported by an unspoken solidarity. The meticulously crafted larger as life works create a contemplative environment – quiet moments of reflection captured in time.

Within the newest body of work, Logan uses urban architecture as a metaphor – stairs lead to differing states of consciousness, doors open to levels of awareness, streets become veins in a living, organic city space. The aptly titled show, ‘Pretty Ugly’ expresses his uniqueness in noticing subtle, overlooked moments in a chaotic, ugly, busy world, and rendering them poetic glimpses of the universal human condition.

on June 2nd, in addition to my show opening, I will have a shirt released through my good friend Daryll Peirce who owns INDVSL clothing (http://indivisualclothing.com/)

Almost 7 years ago I did the respirator design for a tour through Asia. Since then I have people over the years ask me to reprint them but I resisted until now.

I am happy to team up with INDVSL to relaunch the shirt in new color schemes, as well as men and women sizing.

No person gets to this point alone. There is an army of people who contribute towards the success of any individual and I am no different.

For me this show is only possible because of the selfless acts of: my Mother, Tristan Eaton, Jordan Seiler, Alex Rasmussen, Andrew Black, Peat Wollaeger, Eric Allouche, George Benias, Miya Ando, and Patrick Taylor. Without them, the work you see at the opening would not have existed, or if it did, it wouldn’t have been half as good as it is. To those people – don’t ever think that I forget who helped me get here!

Lastly, the biggest thanks goes to Kristen. There aren’t enough words in the world to express my gratitude for having someone that is patient and supportive. There aren’t enough ways to say thank you for that.>
