Alphonse van Woerkom “Face Value,”
Portraits of American Artists at Sragow Gallery.
Five years ago the Dutch-American artist Alphonse van Woerkom started a project by drawing large-scale portraits of established American artists. Using a basic format, the works are drawn on heavy paper with charcoal, carbon pencils and pastels. The artists posed for him in their own environment giving him enough time to make all the necessary notes and sketches. The large oversized scale evokes an intimacy generally not easily obtainable in smaller portraits. The works are from 6′ x 6′ to 8′ x 6′. Most artists posed in a frontal or slightly turned position – head and shoulders only.
