Kenny Scharf

Kenny Scharf (b. 1958) is a contemporary painter who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Scharf received his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1980. He remained in the city and became a key figure in the East Village art scene, exhibiting in numerous galleries and eventually renowned institutions.

Scharf’s vibrant, saturated and playful works evoke cartoon imagery and challenge the line between high and “low” art. In 2001, he created one episode of his own animated series, “The Groovenians.” He has also designed album covers for various artists including The B-52. His acclaim led his work to be included in the 1985 Whitney Biennial. He is active in the New York gallery scene, and also appeared in a 2004 documentary, “The Universe of Keith Haring,” owing to a close friendship with the graffiti artist.
