Keiichi Tanaami

Keiichi Tanaami (b. 1936) is a contemporary, multi-disciplinary artist who is most known for his psychedelic images. He was born in Tokyo and graduated from Musashino Art University after majoring in design. He moved to the U.S. in 1968, where he began working at Andy Warhol’s Factory. Tanaami eventually relocated in San Francisco, California.

Tanaami explores dream imageries and memories through the use of various media including painting, printmaking, film, and sculptures. His color palette is vibrant and playful, and he frequently uses traditional Asian iconographies such as pine trees, goldfish, cranes and elephants but distorts them to personalize them and infuse them with a new meaning.

Tanaami has been most active in the Tokyo art scene, regularly exhibiting in galleries. In addition, he has participated in solo and group exhibitions in New York, London and Berlin.
