Alex Katz
Alex Katz (b. 1927) is an American visual artist best known for his involvement with the Pop movement. His figurative works are reminiscent of Tom Wesselmann’s portraits in their tonal simplicity and intensity of color. Katz was born in Brooklyn, New York and studied at Cooper Union in New York and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine.
Katz had his first solo exhibition 1954 at Roko Gallery in New York. His artistic success became recognized when the Whitney Museum of Art in New York featured his prints in 1974, which was followed by a traveling retrospective at the museum in 1986. He still exhibits worldwide, having exhibitions at Richard Gary Gallery in Chicago, Timothy Taylor Gallery in London and The Pace Gallery in New York, as well as prestigious institutions including Tate Modern in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He is currently represented by the Pace Gallery in New York.
